Rainbow 6 Siege: Disrupting the Esports Scene

On January 27, 2020, we launched it: Milpitas Xtreme Robotics' 2020 Rainbow Six Siege Esports Tournament.

This is the welcome message that greeted participants as they slowly trickled into our Discord event server:

Welcome to the official kickoff message of Milpitas Xtreme Robotic's 2020 Rainbow Six Siege Esports Tournament!

"MXR's 2020 R6 Tournament will be on May 24, 2020, in the Milpitas High Theatre from 7 AM - 10 PM. It will be a full day of free swag, snacks, and a competitive esports experience to remember! All competitors will have a chance at prizes and merch from our sponsors, including HyperX (RGB mice/keyboards), EKWB (newly-released liquid cooling systems), Noctua, Facebook, Discord, Jackbox Games, and more - not only can you expect tournament champions to win prizes, but there is a chance to win for sportsmanship or simply in giveaways as well.

A few months previous to the launch, a handful of excited members (Edward M, Ben B, and Damon P) from our club had started to build the R6 Twitch Drone (a robot) from Ubisoft's video game. Their excitement was beautifully contagious, and pushed me to reach out to Ubisoft's marketing manager. The dominoes fell before I could really keep up, but we found ourselves planning a Rainbow Six Siege Esports Tournament set on the same day as our STEMxReality ("STEM Cross Reality") event, as a way to inspire those in both the STEM and gaming communities to see the incredible worlds and realities that STEM can open for all of us.

Soon after the release of registration to the entire Bay Area, we had nearly 100 applications for the tournament, a tournament that only had 40 spots open! Our Discord server exploded with 160+ attendees and spectators, all incredibly excited for the event. Our first esports tournament, and it was already unimaginably successful!

Unfortunately, like many events set from March to May of 2020, the 2020 MXR R6 Tournament had to be postponed due to COVID-19. However, we promise our attendees and participants:

We will be back on the road as soon as it is safe, and we are going to make it greater and brighter than ever.
